Recently, there’s been plenty of buzz about a new energy initiative called the Green Button, which allows millions of utility customers in California to access their electricity data and view the information with applications like Simple Energy. If you live in California and you’re wondering exactly how it works, we’re here to help you get started in just a few easy steps.
First of all, in order to access your Green Button energy data, you’ll need to be a customer of one of the utilities in California who have signed up for the program: Pacific Gas and Electric, San Diego Gas and Electric, or Southern California Edison. If you are a customer of one of these utilities, go ahead and click on the appropriate link above to visit your utility’s website and log into your account to download your Green Button data.
Once you’ve downloaded your data, just visit the Simple Energy Green Button page to sign in with your Facebook account.
This allows you to log in directly to the Simple Energy application and upload your Green Button data. You’ll then be able to view your energy use in a simple graph, compare with your friends, and compete to win points and badges for reducing your energy use over time.
If you’d like to update your Simple Energy data to see how you’re doing compared with your friends in a week or two, simply log into your utility account again and download a new Green Button file, then upload the new file to your Simple Energy account. Best of luck competing with your friends to save energy!
